Why Newcastle United didn’t sign Marc Guehi last summer as Liverpool ‘ready to make significant offer’

Newcastle United transfer target Marc Guehi is now being strongly linked with a move to Liverpool this summer.

Guehi has long been a target at Newcastle United, who saw a series of bids rejected for him in 2024.

Geordie Boot Boys understands that Newcastle remain interested in Guehi and the defender now has just a year to run on his contract at Crystal Palace.

Guehi’s transfer to Newcastle collapsed in 2024 and now it looks increasingly like the Anfield giants will make their move. According to The Daily Telegraph, a “significant offer” is expected.

With that in mind, here’s all you need to know on why Newcastle United didn’t sign Marc Guehi.

Why Newcastle United walked away from Marc Guehi transfer talks

Newcastle were frustrated by Crystal Palace in their attempts to sign the defender last summer.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish demanded “superstar money” for Guehi, who had just played a key role in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final.

Indeed, Newcastle bid £65million for Guehi last summer but it still wasn’t enough.

Guehi was reportedly open to joining Newcastle but, sadly for the Magpies, he remained at Palace and captained them to an historic FA Cup victory – the first major trophy in their history.

Crystal Palace were angry with Paul Mitchell over Marc Guehi saga

The frustration went two ways, it seems.

Last month, noted transfer expert Alex Crook told talkSPORT that Crystal Palace were “angry” and “exasperated” with Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell

Mitchell is leaving Newcastle this month but was in place last year and tried to oversee a deal.

As it stands, he will leave Newcastle without making a major signing.

Crook said: “I think by the end Crystal Palace were quite angry and exasperated by the way he went about it. That made it virtually impossible for Newcastle to get the deal done.

“It’ll be interesting once Paul Mitchell leaves whether Newcastle revisit their interest in Guehi. I don’t see that deal being done all the time Mitchell is still in situ.”

Where Newcastle United go next if they don’t sign Marc Guehi

Newcastle are looking into the European market as they search for a new defender.

Manager Eddie Howe already has four central defenders in the Newcastle United squad but there are long-term doubts over all of them.

Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are both 33, while Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman have suffered with lengthy injury problems.

With that in mind, landing a new player feels of the utmost importance this summer.

Quite who Newcastle bring in is up for debate. What’s important, however, is that they finally add a player to their backline.
