How Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi really feels about his Newcastle United transfer collapsing

Marc Guehi had wanted to sign for Newcastle United, but it does not look like he will get his wish.

The Magpies are set to end the summer without a major signing, with Newcastle pulling out of a deal to sign Marc Guehi.

Toon officials have been unable to agree a fee for the 24-year-old, with Crystal Palace wanting £75million for Guehi.

That is £5million more than what Newcastle United offered, resulting in an impasse.

It is infuriating to see the club commit so much time towards this deal, only for it to collapse on the brink of the window closing.

There is not much time to identify a replacement. Even if there was, Eddie Howe had decided that Guehi was the only centre-back that he wanted.

And it was a move that Guehi had wanted too.

When rumours of interest from Tyneside first emerged, it was reported that Guehi wanted to sign for Newcastle United, and had instructed his representatives to strike a deal.

But while personal terms would not have been an issue, it is Steve Parish who has stood in Newcastle and Guehi’s way. His asking price has stopped the Magpies from getting their man, with the Palace chief standing firm.

While Toon officials could have upped their offer for Guehi again, Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle informed Crystal Palace on Friday morning that they would not be increasing their bid.

Guehi left ‘disappointed’ as Newcastle move falls through

With the move now off, the Chronicle have reported that Guehi is disappointed about not signing for Newcastle United.

However, they add that Guehi still intends to do his best for Crystal Palace, who face Chelsea on Sunday.

It was reported on Thursday that Guehi has not pushed for a move to Newcastle, despite the Magpies believing that he would.

Crystal Palace have now confirmed that Guehi is staying put on deadline day

But now he is staying at Crystal Palace, with Eagles boss Oliver Glasner confirming to Sky Sports that the England international will not be leaving Selhurst Park on transfer deadline day.

“I was never really in doubt,” he said.

“First of all, really congratulations to Crystal Palace, the chairman and the owners, to everyone who didn’t give in.

“Especially after the transfer of Joachim Andersen, it was important that Marc stays and thank you to Marc that he always was close in talking a lot and all the rumours didn’t influence his performance, his mood and his professionalism.

“He’s not pushing to leave Crystal Palace, that was for me the most important thing. That the players like to play for Crystal Palace, for the team here. Marc told me that very often.

“Sometimes people act in the opposite way, Marc told me and acted him, the same way. He showed his fantastic character again. Marc stays at Crystal Palace and stays our captain.”

Eddie Howe is definitely missing out on Guehi, while the club is not targeting a backup centre-back. However, Newcastle are working on one deal, with fans suddenly having hope of a new signing on transfer deadline day.
