Newcastle United may no longer be signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

The Magpies have been chasing Marc Guehi for about a month now, with Paul Mitchell aiming to strike a deal with Crystal Palace for the England international.

When news of Newcastle United‘s interest first broke, the signs were promising. Newcastle’s big fear was that their Guehi bid would be hijacked, but that has not happened.

Instead, Toon officials have severely struggled to agree a fee with Crystal Palace for the 24-year-old.

Now Crystal Palace want £75million for Marc Guehi, after Newcastle had proposed a deal worth £70million. That would have made him Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, but Steve Parish wants more.

Newcastle set to ‘walk away’ from Marc Guehi deal ahead of transfer deadline day

That is why the deal is hanging in the balance, with Newcastle suddenly unlikely to secure their top target before the transfer window closes on Friday at 11pm.

A disastrous transfer window could be about to get even worse, and Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has shared on X what he has heard about Newcastle’s pursuit of Guehi.

“Newcastle are set to walk away from their long-running pursuit of Marc Guéhi — after growing tired of negotiating with Crystal Palace,” he wrote.

“The St James’ Park club have offered a club record £65m + £5m in add-ons for the England international, but Palace owner Steve Parish has so far refused to accept.

“The deal is not dead in the water, but I’m told the situation “isn’t good” with Newcastle chiefs feeling they’ve made a brilliant offer.

“#NUFC Sporting Director Paul Mitchell had been desperate to land Eddie Howe’s no.1 summer target, hence the huge offer that sits on the Palace table.”

Newcastle are now in a desperate situation ahead of the transfer window closing

Newcastle United have dedicated the past few weeks to trying to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

The window is set to close on Friday night, and now the Magpies are about to walk away from negotiations.

It has transpired into a real saga, and one that is wildly embarrassing for the recruitment team behind the scenes at St James’ Park.

Downie states that Paul Mitchell has been desperately trying to sign Eddie Howe’s top target, but it does not look like he is going to deliver. It has been a really tough start for him as Newcastle’s sporting director, and he really needed to get this Guehi deal done to relieve the pressure.

However, the pressure is only going to intensify.

With the Guehi deal on the brink of collapsing, Newcastle need to decide what their next move is – and they need to do it fast.

The transfer window closes on Friday, with Mitchell and co having just over 24 hours to decide who they are going to target.

If they bring no one in, this will be solidified as the worst transfer window since the change of ownership at St James’ Park. In truth, that could remain the case even if a new signing does arrive before 11pm tomorrow.
