Newcastle United want to strike quickly during this summer’s transfer window.
Despite the imminent exit of sporting director Paul Mitchell, Eddie Howe is eager to add to his Newcastle United squad as soon as possible.
Howe wants Newcastle to sign targets quickly this summer, with the club having failed to add any first-team players to his squad in 2024.
Now, however, Newcastle are confident they are in a strong PSR position after raising funds through the sales of Elliot Anderson, Yankuba Minteh, Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly.
As such, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is back on the radar. Newcastle tried to sign Guehi in 2024 but could not agree a deal with the south London side.
The 24-year-old, however, will be out of contract in the summer of 2026. If Palace are to extract something approaching maximum value for the England international, they will surely have to cash in this summer unless he signs a new contract.
Eagles chairman Steve Parish, however, won’t make it easy.

Marc Guehi relaxed over Crystal Palace future
TBR football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about Guehi’s immediate future.
He revealed that a number of other clubs are keen to sign the player, too. Newcastle are not alone in the race, with the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid previously linked with a move.
While Howe is keen to bring him to Newcastle this summer, Guehi himself is calm about the situation. With the end of his Palace contract in sight, he’s in a very strong bargaining position ahead of his next move.

“Newcastle’s interest in Guehi remains – it has never gone away,” he said.
“Eddie Howe wanted him last summer and he wants him now.
“Last year they could not agree terms on a deal, and this summer won’t be any easier – Palace chief Steve Parish won’t let him go for a bargain fee.
“He is very calm – yes he is open to leaving, but he knows there is a chance he stays until next summer too when his contract expires – it could play out that way.”
How Marc Guehi compares to Fabian Schar
Fabian Schar looks the most likely player Guehi would replace in the Newcastle backline if he were to join this summer.
With Sven Botman and Dan Burn able to operate as left-sided central defenders, the Swiss defender could be the man to fall out of Howe’s starting XI should the club finally land the England international.
| Stat | Marc Guehi | Fabian Schar |
| Tackles/90 | 1.8 | 1.1 |
| Interceptions/90 | 0.8 | 1.3 |
| Clearances/90 | 4.6 | 3.9 |
| Blocks/90 | 0.7 | 0.7 |
| Key passes/90 | 0.5 | 0.1 |
| Long balls/90 | 3.3 | 4.1 |
That is not to suggest Schar wouldn’t contribute but it’s difficult to imagine Newcastle going to such lengths to sign Guehi only to either play him slightly out of position or leave him on the bench.
As is listed above, Guehi beats Schar in some key defensive metrics. There’s also not a huge amount of difference in their passing statistics either, while Guehi is obviously much younger than the 33-year-old.
Almost a year after their failed pursuit, it seems Newcastle are ready to try and sign him again.
