Alexander Isak could now be set to return to Newcastle United after what feels like an underwhelming end to the Liverpool transfer saga.
Isak wants to join Liverpool, although Newcastle United rejected their opening offer on Friday.
To suggest there is no chance Isak leaves the club this summer feels unwise. Clearly, he wants to move to Anfield, and there are understandable reasons for that.
There are worrying noises about PIF’s project at Newcastle and Liverpool could not only offer more money, but also the chance to win major trophies on a consistent and realistic basis.
Newcastle still feel some way off that and the fact they are enduring a dreadful summer transfer window does not help.
Still, Liverpool may walk away from the Isak deal, which leaves the striker in a rather awkward position upon his potential return to the Newcastle United training ground.

When Alexander Isak could make Newcastle United return
According to Craig Hope of The Daily Mail on social media platform X, the club see no reason why Isak should not be back in training with the rest of the Newcastle United squad next week.
A “minor thigh injury” ruled the Sweden star out of the club’s pre-season tour of Asia, though he has been training at former club Real Sociedad.
That is not a good look of course but the injury has been used as the club’s official line to explain his absence.
When Alexander Isak could actually play for Newcastle United again
Isak could play for Newcastle again in August, when the Sela Cup starts.
Eddie Howe’s side host Espanyol on Friday 8 August before welcoming Atletico Madrid to St James’ Park the day after that.
To pretend there’s no longer any doubts about Isak’s future would be pointless. Given all that’s gone on, it’s hard to imagine him being delighted at the thought of returning to Tyneside.
Still, the fact is that Newcastle pay his wages and are expecting him to return. Perhaps Liverpool will come back in for him but, until then, he remains a Newcastle player.
