Liverpool now have doubts about Alexander Isak deal after Newcastle United respond

The Alexander Isak to Liverpool saga took a shock turn for Newcastle United on Friday.

Newcastle United rejected a bid worth £120million plus add-ons for Isak, who still has three years left on his contract.

Isak wants to join Liverpool and has not been training with the rest of the Newcastle United squad during pre-season

Newcastle will only sell Isak if they can find a replacement, which does not look likely right now.

The club are enduring a miserable summer transfer window, struggling to sign players at every turn.

Still, and while it may not be the best outcome for any party now, a surprising update has emerged.

Liverpool suddenly have doubts about Alexander Isak deal

According to BBC Sport, Liverpool would be willing to walk away from talks to sign the Sweden international.

The report claims that Liverpool now have doubts about whether Isak is affordable during this summer’s transfer window as it stands.

Newcastle value Isak at over £150million, and Liverpool’s opening bid was well below that figure.

Newcastle United cannot rest yet with second Liverpool bid still possible

The wording is interesting. Being “willing” to walk away is different from leaving the table entirely.

Indeed, things can change. If Newcastle were to sign a few forwards, it would perhaps open the door for Isak to depart if Liverpool get closer towards their valuation.

Celebrating this as any kind of win feels somewhat hollow. If Isak stays at Newcastle this summer, it will surely largely be because a player of a similar profile does not want to join them.

Even if he does remain at the club, Eddie Howe has quite the job on his hands to get him focused.

Imagining a world where Newcastle have Isak in the team next season feels dangerous, too. Just because Liverpool would be willing to walk doesn’t mean they definitely will.

Speaking exclusively to Geordie Boot Boys, transfer insider Graeme Bailey said: “We know a price of £150m has been suggested but I think if and when Liverpool get above £130m then things will get interesting – I can see a deal being done at £140million.
