Marc Guehi was Newcastle United’s top target in the summer transfer window.

It was a transfer saga that dragged on for months on Tyneside. But in the end, Marc Guehi stayed at Crystal Palace.

Newcastle made bids of up to £70million for Guehi which were knocked back by Palace. The 24-year-old has captained the Eagles this season, but things haven’t been going too well for them in the Premier League.

The Magpies failed in their attempts to land key targets. Lewis Hall’s signing has proven to be the only one to have added value to Newcastle’s squad.

Palace sit 14th in the table but can take pride in the fact that they have only lost one of their last 10 games, albeit with five draws in the process.

Guehi scored an own goal during Palace’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle in November. The Magpies looked to have the game won until a last-gasp Daniel Munoz goal, coincidentally assisted by Guehi thwarted them.

Trevoh Chalobah joined Palace on loan from Chelsea in the summer. The 25-year-old made 12 appearances under Oliver Glasner, scoring three goals. However, Chalobah was recently recalled by Chelsea, so Palace are now suddenly a man lighter.

A recent report has suggested what the feeling of Palace staff is around the announcement with Guehi’s future still in doubt.

Guehi won’t join Newcastle in January

Chalobah’s recall makes Palace weaker. It’s a blow for Glasner who had a solid option in defence to Partner Guehi.

Palace have since assessed their options to see what action they have to take following his departure. According to BBC Sport, Palace are unlikely to sign another centre-back in January, despite Chalobah’s departure.

Chris Richards took his place as Palace beat Leicester City on Wednesday with their summer signing Chadi Riad on the bench.

Riad has missed a large chunk of the season with injury but his return to fitness couldn’t have come at a better time for Glasner. The report suggests that with Riad returning and Richards also available, they feel like they have enough bodies in the squad to be covered for the rest of the season.

Palace already look to have signed Newcastle target Romain Esse from Millwall. Now Guehi looks set to stay until the summer.

Guehi won’t sign a new Crystal Palace contract

While Guehi may not be joining Newcastle in January, it hasn’t completely ruled out a move.

It was reported that Guehi intends to leave Crystal Palace in the summer. The England international has informed Glasner that this will be his last season as a Crystal Palace player.

Guehi has been attracting interest from Chelsea this month, but a move looks unlikely after Chalobah was recalled.

Newcastle can afford to wait until the summer for Guehi thanks to the return of Sven Botman. The blow of failing to land Guehi was certainly softened by the fact that Fabian Schar has excelled as a starting centre-back this season when his position in the starting XI looked to be in jeopardy.
