Newcastle United spent the summer transfer window chasing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

It was a summer to forget for Newcastle’s new sporting director Paul Mitchell who joined the club midway through the transfer window when plans had already been put in place by Eddie Howe and the previous hierarchy.

Although Newcastle still had summer signings like Lewis Hall, Odysseas Vlachodimos and William Osula it’s only Hall who has made an impression in the starting 11.

At just 20-years-old, he has been one of Newcastle’s best players this season. Hall was recently called up to the England squad, making his debut against Greece.

Guehi was the hot topic of the summer with a move to Newcastle looking possible at times. Newcastle’s hefty bids for Guehi were rejected but the 25-year-old remains now.

Although a January approach looked probable, Geordie Boot Boys recently reported that Newcastle target Guehi would not be sold in January.

However, the latest reports suggest that Guehi has more admirers.

The latest transfer news on Newcastle United target Marc Guehi

According to the Mirror, Liverpool are readying an offer to sign Marc Guehi, whose contract expires in the summer of 2026.

Guehi ranks highly in their list of options with central defence a big focus for them across the 2025 transfer windows.

The England international is very open to a move to Merseyside despite Newcastle’s longstanding interest in Guehi.

TEAMTALK report that there is an understanding at Palace that this will be Guehi’s last season with the club with manager Oliver Glasner allowing him to take the next step in his career.

It’s a blow for Newcastle who spent a long time chasing Guehi for it all to be in vain.

Potential alternatives to Marc Guehi for Newcastle United

With Newcastle’s move for Guehi now hanging in the balance, Paul Mitchell must now look at other options if they want to find a long-term replacement for Fabian Schar.

Newcastle were linked with Malick Thaiw in the summer but the Magpies were way off AC Milan’s valuation of the young German. A deal could be reignited in January but may prove difficult without European football.

There has been interest from Newcastle for Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov who has made a big impression on manager Will Still. He could be available for as little as £25m this summer.

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has also been linked with a move to Tyneside. It could cost Newcastle just £6m but his hefty wage could be off-putting for Howe.
