Newcastle United continuing their pursuit of young talents across England and Europe but Paul Mitchell must act fast.
Since Mitchell joined Newcastle in July, there has been a complete shift in the club’s transfer strategy. Newcastle must recruit young players across Europe.
Newcastle will announce the signing of Kyle Fitzgerald towards the end of the January transfer window. The 17-year-old, who currently plays for Galway United impressed during a trial at the club earlier in the season.
Mitchell has also got an eye on the lower leagues of England, targets have been identified but no approaches have been made.
However, a recent update from Fabrizio Romano suggests Crystal Palace have made an offer for a young attacker in the Championship who is liked by Newcastle.
Mitchell must act fast, or they’ll risk losing out on a highly thought-of player.

Crystal Palace approach Newcastle target Romain Esse
Romain Esse has impressed for Millwall this season despite the Lions’ recent drop in form. Newcastle want Esse with Mitchell keen to give Eddie Howe more youth to build around.
Newcastle, Palace and Nottingham Forest have watched Esse this season. Ligue 1 side Monaco have also reportedly expressed an interest in the 19-year-old.
Now, journalist Romano has confirmed that Palace have made an approach for Esse who has made 23 appearances in the Championship this season, scoring four goals.
Romano states that Esse is high on their transfer wishlist, but a deal won’t be easy in January.
Esse is versatile, a quality Howe likes. He can be a contender to play in midfield or as a right winger where he has played most of the season with Millwall.
Esse’s chances of getting minutes at Newcastle
Newcastle’s right side of attack has been in a bad way since Howe was appointed head coach in 2021.
Jacob Murphy is in a great run of form but Miguel Almiron is set for a Newcastle exit in January – there’s a lack of depth in that position, so Esse could slot right in.
| Apperances | Goals | Assists | |
| Romain Esse | 24 | 4 | 1 |
| Jacob Murphy | 17 | 3 | 6 |
With Murphy also 29, it’s an opportunity for Howe and Mitchell to build for the future. The Magpies already have quality in attack thanks to Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak’s sensational performances – a quality young winger would be the final piece to the puzzle.
With the first week of the transfer week now concluded, the pressure is slowly building on Mitchell to give Howe what he wants.
