Sickener for Newcastle United as Chelsea declare interest in signing £18m star

Chelsea scuppered Newcastle United’s summer transfer plans in 2024.

The Magpies were aiming to sign a right-sided centre-back, with Newcastle interested in Tosin Adarabioyo.

There was confidence over a deal, while the fact he was available on a free transfer meant Newcastle United could commit more money elsewhere – likely towards a right winger.

However, that plan collapsed when Chelsea swooped in for Tosin. Instead, he signed for the Blues, much to the frustration of the Toon Army.

That resulted in the Magpies turning their attention to Marc Guehi, which developed into quite the saga.

Newcastle were unable to strike a deal for the England international, who remains at Crystal Palace.

Chelsea interested in signing Marc Guehi

Rumours of Eddie Howe wanting the 24-year-old have continued, although it was claimed that Guehi to Newcastle in January is unlikely.

But while he might not be on his way to St James’ Park, there could be an opportunity for Guehi to return to his former club.

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea are interested in signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

They report that Guehi’s representatives are aware of the interest from Chelsea, with the Blues looking at defensive reinforcements following injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.

As for the aforementioned Tosin, he was an unused substitute during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Chelsea’s transfer plans will infuriate Newcastle United

If Guehi were to sign for Chelsea, it would mean a return to Stamford Bridge for a player who the England squad call Uncle Marc.

The defender left Chelsea to join Crystal Palace for £18million in 2021, and now there is talk of a return in 2025.

It sums up Chelsea’s ridiculous recruitment record, while it also highlights how free they are to splash the cash at a time when PSR holds Newcastle United back.

Chelsea beat Newcastle to Tosin Adarabioyo on a free, only to barely play the centre-back. Now they are targeting Marc Guehi, a player who came through their academy and sold, and a player who Newcastle have been priced out of. Not only that, but Newcastle were only trying to sign Guehi in the first place because they did not get Tosin!

What a mess, but it is Newcastle who will continue to suffer, rather than Chelsea.
