Newcastle United have been cursing the fact they did not sign Marc Guehi in the summer all season.
However, he was almost the Magpies’ match-winner on Saturday afternoon, as Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The opening goal of the game was an own goal, as Lewis Hall, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon combined with a well-worked free-kick straight from the training ground.
Gordon was slipped in behind by Tonali, and his pass across goal was turned into his own net by Marc Guehi.
While Guehi is unlikely to sign for Newcastle in January, the 24-year-old nearly handed the team who wanted to sign him a vital three points. Sadly, Crystal Palace equalised in stoppage time through Daniel Munoz. Funnily enough, Guehi made up for his error by providing the assist.

Newcastle United fans react as Marc Guehi scores for them
A hilarious twist of fate has meant that Guehi has scored his first Newcastle United goal, despite Paul Mitchell failing to sign him in the summer.
He could have become Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever at the start of the season. Now he is showing his value by scoring an own goal in his first appearance against the Magpies since the failed transfer attempt.
The irony is not lost on Toon fans, who have reacted to Guehi’s own goal on X (formally known as Twitter).
One fan wrote: “I take it all back… I knew Guehi would do brilliantly for.”
Another added: “£70M well spent on Guehi getting his first #nufc goal. Get in Marc.”
“There’s pushing for a move and then there’s that, love it,” posted a third Newcastle United supporter.
“See Guehi’s still desperately trying to push that move through,” remarked this Toon fan.
A fifth member of the Toon army wrote: “That was the plan with Guehi all along then.”
Finally, this supporter posted: “Marc Guehi scores his first #NUFC goal five weeks before signing for the Mags.”
Why Marc Guehi might not join Newcastle United after all
As far as auditions go, that was pretty perfect for Guehi.
He got a goal and an assist for each team, as Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United ended as a 1-1 draw.
But while Toon fans hope that Guehi will get the chance to score more goals for Eddie Howe’s side in the near future, a January transfer to St James’ Park does not appear to be on the cards.
Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Crystal Palace are unlikely to sell Guehi during the January transfer window, with Newcastle United not expecting to bring the centre-back to Tyneside.
Instead, his future will be resolved in the summer. That is when he will leave Crystal Palace, with Guehi’s contract set to expire in 2026.
Guehi will be at St James’ Park in 2025, but in the colours of Crystal Palace. The two sides meet again on March 15th. It will be interesting to see if Guehi is just as impactful as he was during the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.
