Oliver Glasner predicts what will happen to Marc Guehi in January amid Newcastle United and Liverpool interest

The January transfer window is now open and Newcastle United are being linked with a number of different moves.

Indeed, despite the fact PSR limitations are believed to remain in play for Newcastle, they continue to be touted as a potential landing spot for a variety of different players.

While it remains to be seen if the club do actually sign anyone this month, the nature of gossip and rumours will likely see the links continue right up until deadline day.

One of the names who reportedly remains on the radar is Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Newcastle tried and failed to sign the England international last summer and had been tipped to make a fresh move this month, albeit Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in the player.

Speaking on Friday, Eagles boss Oliver Glasner revealed what he expected to happen to Guehi this month.

According to The Standard, Newcastle and Liverpool both retain a long-standing interest in the 24-year-old.

Still, Glasner suggested Guehi was likely to remain at Selhurst Park until the summer at least.

By then, the former Chelsea youngster will be into the final year of his contract.

Asked if Guehi would stay at the club in January, Guehi said: “I think so. No player from our squad came to me and said [they] want to leave. No one.

“No one that played all the games, all the minutes, like Marc, and no one from the players who didn’t play so many minutes. This is the most relevant part: what the player tells me.

“If one is coming and says they want to leave and both clubs find an agreement, I think it will happen. But as long as a player doesn’t come — and Marc didn’t come — I am really not concerned he will leave.

“January 31 is a long time [away], and I know I will have to answer this question several times. You will hear the same answer again.”

What Newcastle United know about Marc Guehi during the January transfer window

Newcastle obviously went big on their pursuit of Guehi during the summer, so it was always likely that interest would remain.

In fact, The Athletic last month reported that Newcastle were still keen, albeit insiders were aware that a January move for the defender would be difficult to do.

With Palace struggling this season, it would surely take a huge amount of money to convince them to sell.

Perhaps it will be one to revisit this summer, although rival interest could prove a problem.
