Russell Martin shares extremely worrying update on Ryan Fraser’s move from Newcastle to Southampton

Miguel Almiron is not the only winger that Newcastle United are struggling to sell this summer.

The 30-year-old had been in talks regarding a departure, but Almiron’s move to Charlotte FC has now collapsed.

The Magpies were unable to agree a deal with the MLS side, and Newcastle could now keep Almiron. That would hurt the club financially, as Almiron is well placed to boost Newcastle’s PSR position.

Newcastle are also trying to get rid of Ryan Fraser

Miguel Almiron is going nowhere as it stands, and the same goes for Ryan Fraser.

The Scotland international is not training with the Newcastle United first-team – and hasn’t since he was dropped to the Under-21s in February 2023.

Fraser spent last season on loan at Southampton and impressed, and has been hoping to join the Saints permanently.

Southampton have a deal in place to sign Fraser, but the 30-year-old is still a Toon player. That is because Fraser is yet to reach an agreement with Newcastle, who effectively need to pay off what is left of his contract. Fraser’s deal at St James’ Park is due to expire in the summer of 2025.

Russell Martin shares update on Ryan Fraser situation

Newcastle’s hope was that letting Fraser join Southampton on a free would be seen as a compromise, but that has not proven to be the case.

And with the new Premier League season set to start in a couple of days, the winger is still yet to complete his permanent transfer from Newcastle to Southampton.

It is now a transfer that is ‘unlikely’ to happen, in the eyes of Southampton manager Russell Martin, who has spoken to TalkSPORT about his side’s interest in Fraser.

“I am not sure that will happen,” he said.

“That’s down to Newcastle.

“He did brilliantly for us last season, and I love him as a person and a player. He was really popular with the dressing room, fans and staff, but we are nowhere near a deal for Ryan.

“The longer it goes on, it looks increasingly unlikely.”

Newcastle and Fraser need to find a compromise

Newcastle really are poor sellers in the transfer market – although you could argue that this situation is not completely their fault.

A compromise needs to be found, with the transfer window set to close in just over a fortnight.

It must be infuriating for Fraser, who has the chance to sign for another Premier League club and play in the top flight. In that respect, it is understandable why Newcastle probably think he should bend a bit more to get this deal done.

But in Fraser’s defence, he signed a five-year deal when he joined Newcastle United in 2020. He is entitled to receive the money he signed up for, as is the case when players leave a club.

Martin’s comments are definitely worrying. He has spoke glowingly about Fraser, but appears to have no confidence in him playing for the Saints this season.

Fraser definitely will not be involved for either side on Saturday, as Newcastle face Southampton on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. Jamie Carragher has predicted Newcastle to win, as Eddie Howe aims to start the 2024/25 campaign with victory.
