‘Quality’ Newcastle United stalwart could leave in January despite Eddie Howe plea

While it was not a great summer for Newcastle United, one of Eddie Howe’s wishes did come true during the transfer window.

The Newcastle United manager was not given a new right-sided centre-back, while he also did not get to welcome a new right winger into his squad.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe had to say goodbye to Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, which was massively disappointing.

Not many things went Eddie Howe’s way during the summer, but he did get what he wanted when it came to Kieran Trippier.

During the summer transfer window, Kieran Trippier wanted to leave Newcastle United.

It felt like a move away was inevitable for the right-back, despite Eddie Howe saying he was ‘desperate’ to keep the ‘quality’ Trippier at Newcastle.

The Newcastle United manager got his way, with Trippier forced to remain on Tyneside.

It remains to be seen what his stance is on leaving ahead of the January transfer window, with the 34-year-old recently winning back his place in the Toon starting XI. However, he is set to lose it again, with Trippier out of action with a hamstring injury.

Fresh interest in Kieran Trippier ahead of January

If Trippier is still intent on leaving then there could be an opportunity for that dream to become a reality.

According to Pianeta Milan, AC Milan are interested in signing Kieran Trippier from Newcastle United in January.

They report that Trippier could replace Davide Calabria, as well as provide cover for French left-back Theo Hernandez.

Interestingly, AC Milan were linked with signing Trippier in the summer.

Newcastle will need to sign a replacement

The only way Newcastle will let Trippier go is if they sign a replacement. That either means they bring in another right-back, or they sign a centre-back who can cover Fabian Schar, which would allow Emil Krafth to focus on being a fullback again.

However, that may depend on finances. Toon officials will be mindful of PSR once again in January, while it has been reported that Newcastle’s priority is to sign a winger.

Newcastle have been linked with signing Chelsea right-back Josh Acheampong, and a deal for the 18-year-old could open the door for Trippier to leave.

Alternatively, there is talk that Newcastle could make a fresh move for Marc Guehi. If he were to arrive, Krafth could revert to being a right-back and act as Tino Livramento’s understudy.
