Newcastle United are considering a January move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, but there is one hurdle they might need to overcome.
Kalvin Phillips is a long-term target for the Magpies, and was a player who Eddie Howe wanted to sign even before his move to Man City.
He was also a target during the summer, only for Newcastle to be told that Phillips wanted to stay at the Eithad Stadium and fight for his place under Pep Guardiola.
Now things have changed again, and it looks like the ‘phenomenal‘ 27-year-old is going to be on the move. He is once again a target for Newcastle, and their need for a midfielder has only intensified over the past fortnight.
Sandro Tonali is set to receive a ban for betting, which could force Newcastle to sign a replacement in the January transfer window. Phillips is reportedly an option that the Magpies are looking at, but there is an issue.

Wages could be an issue for Newcastle and Kalvin Phillips
According to iNews, Newcastle are considering a loan approach for Phillips in January. They state that the midfielder is now open to a move away from Man City, having been unable to force his way into Guardiola’s starting XI.
While a move to Newcastle might be appealing, iNews have stated one issue that could stop this transfer from becoming a reality.
They report that a loan move for Phillips might force the Magpies to break their wage structure. He reportedly earns £150,000-a-week at the Etihad, and it is understandable why Newcastle would be unwilling to match that figure for a loan deal.

It would only be a temporary solution, while iNews add that there is no guarantee that Man City would be open to doing a deal with Newcastle given the fact that the two clubs are now rivals.
It is an intriguing situation, while Phillips is not the only midfielder who is on Newcastle’s radar. Everton star Amadou Onana has also been linked.
However, with Joe Willock back form injury and Newcastle boasting young stars such as Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley, there is still no guarantee that the Magpies dip into the transfer market despite the Tonali situation.
