Newcastle United have once again been linked with Kalvin Phillips – which could be music to the ears of Kieran Trippier.
According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are compiling a list of potential summer targets. One position they want to improve is centre-midfield, and Leeds star Phillips is named as a possible candidate.
This comes just a couple of weeks after the Mail first mentioned that Newcastle could try and sign the 26-year-old this summer.
Phillips has had an injury hit season with Leeds, with just 12 league appearances to his name. He hasn’t played a single minute since December 5th. However, he did return to the Leeds bench for their last game – the dramatic 3-2 win versus Wolves.
Regardless of this season, Phillips captured the heart of the nation at Euro 2020. He was a key player for England, thriving alongside Declan Rice as they made it all the way to the final.
Phillips impressed everyone – including Newcastle defender Trippier.
Newcastle star Kieran Trippier raved about Kalvin Phillips last June
England kicked off their Euro 2020 campaign with a 1-0 win over Croatia. That game saw Phillips named man of the match.
Trippier started that game too, chosen to play left-back by Gareth Southgate. After the game, the now Toon talisman was full of praise for Phillips.
“I’ve seen it in training for a long time now,” Trippier said last year.
“The intensity that he brings to Leeds is phenomenal, and for England here. He’s great on the ball, he reads the game well.
“As a defender, you love to play with someone like him in front of you. He can go all the way to the top – and he’s playing at the highest level now.
“He’s a fantastic player and he’s got a great future ahead of him.”
With those words in mind, Trippier is surely delighted that Newcastle are looking at the possibility of signing Phillips.
Trippier believes he ‘can go all the way to the top’, which is exactly where the Magpies want to go under new ownership.
We need to make the right signings to do that, and Phillips feels like an ideal candidate. He’s proven to be a leader at Leeds, and he’s already popular with a key player at St James’ Park.
It could be an expensive signing, but bringing Phillips to Newcastle would make Trippier very happy. And it would also please a lot of Toon fans who cheered him on at Euro 2020.
