Newcastle United may suddenly have another chance to sign a player they failed to bring to St James’ Park during the summer transfer window.
That is because the future of Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City is suddenly up in the air, just months after the midfielder decided he wanted to stay and fight for his place at the Etihad Stadium.
The 27-year-old was the subject of interest from Newcastle, but he snubbed a move to the North East in favour of remaining with last season’s treble winners. Phillips felt his second season would be much better and that he could force his way into Pep Guardiola’s side.
That has not happened as of yet, despite Man City‘s main defensive midfielder Rodri picking up a suspension. In his absence, Phillips has still not started a Premier League game this season.
He was on the bench for Sunday’s 1-0 loss against Arsenal, with 18-year-old fullback Rico Lewis playing in midfield instead, which was described as ‘embarrassing‘ for Phillips by Martin Keown.

Now it looks like the embarrassment could soon be coming to an end.
Kalvin Phillips likely to leave Manchester City in January
According to iNews, Phillips is becoming more and more likely to leave Manchester City when the January transfer window opens.
The report states Man City were happy for him to leave during the summer, but Phillips opted to stay and fight for his place just a year after his £42million arrival.
Now a loan exit appears to be on the cards, and iNews state that both Newcastle and Everton will be interested in signing the England international.
Another midfield option for Newcastle
A move to St James’ Park would delight Kieran Trippier, who has spoke glowingly about Phillips in the past. He previously described him as a ‘fantastic player’ with ‘phenomenal’ intensity who has a ‘great future ahead of him’.

Whether that future could see him wear the black and white of Newcastle remains to be seen.
He was a target during the summer, and could operate in the number six role in the middle of midfield. That position is currently occupied by Bruno Guimaraes, but he would prefer to play in a more advanced position.
Signing Phillips would allow that to happen, but it would also make our midfield even more inflated with Eddie Howe due to welcome Joelinton and Joe Willock back from injury after the international break.
