It will not be long before Newcastle United discover the length of Sandro Tonali’s ban for betting.

The 23-year-old is being investigated by the Italian Football Federation for betting, which is likely going to lead to a worldwide ban from football for the Newcastle midfielder.

It is a massive blow for Sandro Tonali, who was showered with love and support by the Toon Army during Saturday’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace. He was reportedly concerned going into the game, but the Italian received a wonderful ovation from the fans inside St James’ Park.

The club’s staff, players and fans are right behind Tonali, who has the full support of everyone associated with Newcastle United.

It has been reported that Tonali is unlikely to be involved in Wednesday night’s Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund, and now Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has provided an update on exactly how long the £55million man could be banned for.

Sandro Tonali’s debut season with Newcastle set to end early due to ban

Downie spoke to Sky Sports News on Tuesday and provided an update on Tonali’s looming ban.

“Our information from over colleagues over at Sky Italy is that talks are centring over a 10-month ban for Tonali,” he said.

“If confirmed in the next 48 hours as I say that we imagine it will be, means Tonali will miss the rest of the football season and the Euros for Italy next June as well.

“It looks as though a lengthy ban is coming Tonali’s way.”

That leaves Newcastle with a big decision to make in the transfer market

If Tonali does receive a 10-month ban, it means his first ever season in English football is over. That is such a shame after just 11 appearances.

A 10-month ban would mean Tonali is not allowed to play football until the beginning of next season, which means that Newcastle have a big decision to make.

They now look set to be without a key player for the rest of the campaign, but have the chance to rectify that issue when the transfer window opens in January.

However, that leaves Newcastle with a choice to make. They either bring in a like-for-like replacement to fill the Tonali void, which could lead to issues when the former AC Milan star returns next year. Alternatively, the club could bring in a different type of player who is not suitable for the role that Eddie Howe had Tonali earmarked for.

Some difficult decisions need to be made behind he scenes at St James’ Park. But right now, everyone’s thoughts are with Sandro Tonali.
