With Sandro Tonali set to receive a ban for betting, Newcastle United are assessing their options ahead of the January transfer window.

In just over two months, Newcastle will have the chance to bring in a replacement if they see fit, and the club are currently weighing up what to do and lining up potential targets.

The most heavily linked player is Kalvin Phillips, who looks set to leave Premier League champions Manchester City.

However, Eddie Howe also has another Premier League midfielder on his radar.

Newcastle monitor Everton’s Amadou Onana

According to iNews, Newcastle United are interested in Amadou Onana from Everton.

The report states that the Magpies have been monitoring the Belgium international, who could be allowed to leave Goodison Park at the start of the year given Everton‘s ‘precarious financial situation’.

The report from iNews claims that a loan signing is more likely, but it sounds like Onana would be a permanent option if a deal was available at a decent price.

If Newcastle were to make a move for Onana, it would be the second January transfer window in a row that the Magpies have signed a player from the Toffees. And Anthony Gordon is not the only former teammate who Onana would be reunited with if he decided to move to St James’ Park.

Onana previously played alongside Newcastle defender Sven Botman

The 22-year-old spent one year playing for Lille before moving to Everton in 2022. And during his time in France, he was teammates with Sven Botman.

The pair played alongside each other for Lille in the season after their Ligue 1 triumph, helping the club reach the knockout stages of the Champions League.

At the end of that season, they both earned moves to the Premier League. Botman cost Newcastle £32million and has been an integral part of an incredible side, while Onana moved to Everton for £33million and has been a shining light during a dark period for the Merseyside outfit.

While Everton are not a great team, Onana often looks impressive and would be a decent signing for Newcastle. He is obviously a player who the club admire, as he has been linked with a move to Tyneside on more than one occasion since the summer of 2022.

Now he is linked again, as Newcastle prepare to lose Sandro Tonali for a lengthy period of time.
