Newcastle United transfer target responds amid claims his head is ‘elsewhere’

It’ll be interesting to see what Newcastle United do on the new striker front this summer.

Alexander Isak, of course, is Newcastle United’s current option there and the idea that the Sweden star will drop out of the team any time soon is rather fanciful.

However, Newcastle will play in Europe next season and Eddie Howe needs options. Isak hasn’t exactly been totally free of injuries during his career at St James’ Park, while neither has back-up Callum Wilson.

Wilson could leave Newcastle this summer and, with no new contract signed, is currently on course to do so upon the expiration of his deal at the end of the season. Will Osula is another option, albeit he remains largely untested.

With that in mind, Newcastle have been linked with a number of strikers, including Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Everton. The forward has now provided an update on his future.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin breaks silence on potential Newcastle move

Newcastle hold a long-standing interest in Calvert-Lewin, who is out of contract at Everton this summer.

Having struggled for form over the past few seasons, former Toffees hero Alan Stubbs suggested Calvert-Lewin’s head had been turned considering all the transfer rumours.

The former Sheffield United youngster has scored three goals this season and has missed the last 13 games due to a hamstring injury.

Speaking about his future, however, the 28-year-old hinted at potentially staying at Everton.

“I’m an Everton player and my focus will always be on doing my best for Everton and I have a lot of respect for Everton football club,” he told BBC Sport. “It’s given me everything I have today.

“My main focus is making sure I am in the best condition, it is like going through a mini pre-season to get fit for these last four games. With the new manager coming in the club is moving in the right direction, there’s a new stadium and there’s a lot to be positive about.

“Who wouldn’t want to be part of that?

“There was a lot of uncertainty for a long time a little bit higher up and arguably the last three seasons have been the most difficult in Everton’s Premier League history and I have been there leading the line through that. For me it’s built a lot of experience, and I have a lot of fond memories. Everton will always be a place that is special to me, so we will see what happens.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s salary demand could threaten Newcastle United move

Newcastle have been tipped to sign Calvert-Lewin this summer but perhaps his wages could prove a stumbling block.

Potentially as a free agent, the Everton forward could theoretically be in a position to demand big money in terms of salary in lieu of a transfer fee. It’s been claimed that Calvert-Lewin wants £100k-per-week next season, which would put him in the upper tier in Newcastle’s pay structure.

Player NameSalary
Bruno Guimaraes£160k-per-week
Joelinton£150k-per-week
Anthony Gordon£150k-per-week
Sandro Tonali£120k-per-week
Kieran Trippier£120k-per-week
Alexander Isak£120k-per-week

Bruno Guimaraes is Newcastle’s highest-paid player on a reported £160k-per-week, while the likes of Isak, Anthony Gordon, Sven Botman and Sandro Tonali are thought to be on the same kind of salary as Calvert-Lewin may ask for.

Considering he’d surely only be a back-up if he were to join, that feels steep.
