Newcastle United may utilise the free agent market during the 2025 summer transfer window.
It is an avenue they went down in 2024, with Newcastle United signing Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth.
The Magpies also tried to sign Tosin Adarabioyo, only for the centre-back to join Chelsea instead.
With PSR proving to be such an issue, the free agency market is one that Newcastle United will always look to exploit.
Jonathan David has been linked with Newcastle ahead of his Lille contract expiring, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also going to be on Eddie Howe’s radar.

Newcastle United eye Dominic Calvert-Lewin free transfer
That is according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that Newcastle United are once again interested in signing Calvert-Lewin.
The 28-year-old is due to become a free agent, with his Everton contract set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season.
“Calvert-Lewin is very much a Newcastle target,” he said.
“Eddie Howe’s loved him for a long time, likes him a lot. Newcastle are firmly in the mix for Calvert-Lewin.
“There is a lot of foreign interest as well, but I think there is a very good chance that Calvert-Lewin ends up on Tyneside. We know Eddie Howe likes him, although there is nothing close.”
Newcastle United’s Calvert-Lewin interest dates back to 2021
It makes sense that the Magpies would reignite their interest in Calvert-Lewin.
They need to sign a striker this summer, with Callum Wilson on course to leave St James’ Park.
Newcastle’s striker search could be difficult, but Calvert-Lewin feels like an ideal player to arrive and act as Alexander Isak’s deputy. He has proven Premier League experience, while he is a player who Eddie Howe is very fond of.
A move to the North East would be very appealing for the forward, especially if Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. It has been reported that Calvert-Lewin is open to joining Newcastle when the transfer window opens.
Newcastle almost signed Calvert-Lewin last summer, and he is a player who the Magpies have been targeting ever since the change of ownership on Tyneside.
Shortly after the takeover went through in October 2021, rumours emerged that Newcastle wanted to sign Calvert-Lewin. Those rumours have continued ever since, and his looming free agency could give Howe the perfect opportunity to finally land the striker.
