‘Complete’ striker now looks like his ‘head is elsewhere’ after transfer links with Newcastle

At some point, Newcastle United may need to sign a new striker.

Quite how quickly of course remains up for debate given the most recent suggestions are that Newcastle fans can expect another quiet January transfer window.

Still, the forward area is reportedly something the club are considering looking at freshening up.

Indeed, while Eddie Howe’s side are full of goals at their best, the options behind Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes don’t exactly look all that compelling.

Callum Wilson is out of contract this summer and, frankly, cannot be relied upon despite his obvious quality.

Neither of Miguel Almiron or Jacob Murphy fully convince (albeit they are wingers) and young Will Osula hasn’t yet been trusted with many Premier League minutes.

Isak, meanwhile, is seemingly constantly linked with a move away.

With that in mind, it’s hardly surprising that Newcastle have been linked with a move for various strikers.

One of those, hailed as “complete” by a certain Carlo Ancelotti no less, may be looking for a move.

Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin was strongly linked with a move to St James’ Park during the summer but a deal is thought to have collapsed when the Toffees demanded a fee of around £40million.

Still, the England international is out of contract in the summer and former Everton defender Alan Stubbs says he looks as if he’s had his head turned.

“Everton as a club will not want to lose him for nothing, but for me, it looks like his head is elsewhere,” he told BBC Sport.

“We are at a crossroads for the next chapter of Dominic’s career and for Everton to move on.”

Newcastle have tracked Dominic Calvert-Lewin for years

Newcastle have previously shown a willingness to wait when they decide upon a target, with both Sven Botman and Anthony Gordon signed in the transfer window after the one in which they were initially targeted.

Indeed, TBR Football insider Graeme Bailey told Geordie Boot Boys this summer that Howe had liked the striker for years.

“Eddie Howe has liked him for a lot of years,” he said.

“When he first came in at Newcastle, he wanted him.

“I firmly believe Calvert-Lewin is a player that Eddie Howe thinks he can get a lot more out of.”
