Newcastle United are still looking to make their mark on the January transfer window.
Despite the window being open for two weeks, the Magpies are yet to make a signing for the first-team. Sporting director Paul Mitchell has been active in youth recruitment, however.
Newcastle will announce Kyle Fitzgerland’s signing from Galway United later in January when he turns 18. The striker will link up with Newcastle’s under-21s to continue his development.
The Magpies have already missed out on a few players they have been linked with this season. Donyell Malen snubbed Newcastle to join Aston Villa earlier this week.
Crystal Palace are set to sign Romain Esse, someone Mitchell sent Newcastle scouts to watch. The feeling on Tyneside is that Newcastle will only buy in January if there is an injury to a key member of Eddie Howe’s squad.
Even with Miguel Almiron set to leave Newcastle in the coming days, there is no plan to add extra bodies to the first-team squad.
By digging their heels in, Newcastle risk losing out on yet another target. A recent report suggests someone they have scouted could join a Premier League rival.

Tottenham offered Newcastle target Rayan Cherki
Rayan Cherki has been on Newcastle’s radar for nearly two years. In 2023, Newcastle wanted Cherki to “add more creativity” to their midfield. In the end, Howe signed Sandro Tonali.
The links for the French winger have not one away. In November, it was reported that Cherki would be available for Newcastle in January. The Magpies are yet to make a move.
Now, according to GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Cherki in January. Like Newcastle in 2023, Spurs are keen to add more creativity to their squad. They believe Cherki is the person that can do that.
Lyon are desperate to sell their assets after being given a provisional relegation to Ligue 2 for breaching financial rules. The French club are doing everything they can to make ends meet. Reports from Sky Germany suggest Cherki has a £18.6m release clause. Newcastle should be able to afford that given they are set to receive £10m for Almiron.
Cherki has had a great season so far, scoring five goals and bagging seven assists in all competitions. The French international has also enjoyed a great vein of form in the Europa League this season, scoring twice in six games.
The report also suggests that Spurs have been offered the chance to sign Lille striker Jonathan David who Newcastle want. David is out of contract in the summer and there are thought to be many Premier League clubs fighting for his signature.
Cherki would improve Newcastle’s attack
With Almiron set to leave the club, it leaves Jacob Murphy as the only right-wing option for Howe. Signing Cherki would be a sensible move for Newcastle given his ability to not only play on the wing, but in attacking midfield as well.
| Appearances (All Competitions) | Goals | Assists | |
| Rayan Cherki | 19 | 5 | 7 |
Newcastle have lost Harvey Barnes through injury for the next month. Another injury would leave Howe down to the bare bones on either wing.
Mitchell knows what he must now do. Even if Newcastle are reluctant to spend in January, there needs to be some sort of investment to keep their chances of qualifying for European football as high as possible.
Newcastle is definitely the more attractive option at the moment in comparison to Tottenham. The Magpies sit fourth in the Premier League while Tottenham are struggling for wins in the bottom half.
