Donyell Malen looks set for a return to the Premier League, but not to Newcastle United.

The Magpies are in the market for more attacking options in January as they look to continue their push to qualify for European football next season.

Howe wants Newcastle to sign a forward but PSR continues to play a big part in their spending.

Borussia Dortmund star Donyell Malen is on Newcastle’s radar for a move in January. The Dutch striker hasn’t hit the ground running this season but is reportedly excited at the prospect of a potential return to England.

Malen spent time at Arsenal during his youth career before moving to PSV in 2017 and then Dortmund in 2021.

The 25-year-old was part of Dortmund’s squad that visited St James’ Park in the Champions League last season. Malen won the Player of the Match award as Dortmund beat Newcastle 1-0.

Now, reports have now claimed that the German side have accepted a bid for the striker – Newcastle fans won’t be happy.

Borussia Dortmund accept Aston Villa’s Malen bid amid Newcastle interest

Premier League rivals Aston Villa were another side keen on signing the 25-year-old who has scored twice in the Champions League this season.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Dortmund have accepted a bid of €25m (£21m) plus €5m (£4m) in add-ons – only some small details need to be hashed out before the player is announced.

It’s a blow for Newcastle who are eager to replace Callum Wilson who is out of contract at the end of the season. Although the Dutchman hasn’t had the best season in the Bundesliga, Howe would’ve liked his versatility – Malen can also play on the right wing, a position that Newcastle are struggling for depth in.

With Villa in the Champions League, Malen isn’t going to miss out on any extra minutes. An extra blow for Howe is that Newcastle were offered Malen earlier in the January window but the opportunity is now past them.

Newcastle’s options away from Malen

Sporting director Paul Mitchell must regroup and explore other options away from Malen after he slipped through Newcastle’s fingers.

Newcastle are keeping tabs on Stefanos Tzimas from PAOK, currently on loan at FC Nurnberg, he looks to be a fine young prospect with a bright future.

Elsewhere, Jonathan David is a Newcastle target – the Canadian has interest across Europe but the Magpies could land him on a free in the summer.

Internally, William Osula could be considered and there are plenty of options in Newcastle’s academy. The likes of Ben Parkinson and Sean Neave have both impressed in the last year.
