Striker Jonathan David is on Newcastle United’s radar in the January transfer window.
LOSC Lille have done well to keep Jonathan David at the club for so long given how highly he is rated across Europe. The Canadian is out of contract in the summer, but there’s no shortage of interest in him.
Eddie Howe is keen to improve his attacking options with David a possible candidate to move to Tyneside. Newcastle want David to give Alexander Isak some backup, but to provide more threat in front of goal to keep the Magpies’ Champions League qualification hopes alive.
David turns 25 next week but he’s already made a huge name for himself in France scoring 101 goals in 211 appearances for Lille since joining the club in 2020.
West Ham are keen on beating Newcastle to David, new Hammers boss Graham Potter could make the Canadian his first signing for the club. Those in the Lille camp are adamant that David will stay at the club despite exit rumours.
A recent transfer report has now given an update on what David’s representatives are doing while exit rumours persist.

Jonathan David’s representatives state the financial packages on offer will be vitally important
There are four Premier League clubs in discussions about a move for David as well as clubs in Italy. It’s thought that Newcastle would need to offer £100,000 per week to David to match his wage demands.
According to The Athletic, David’s representatives are listening to proposals and setting out expectations to interested parties.
They continue by stating that offering the best financial package will be important. As well as Newcastle, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Aston Villa think highly of the Canadian.
David has an offer from Lille on the table, but he is expected to move on in the summer. One of his qualities is his versatility, David can play as a striker, in attacking midfield or as a winger leaving Howe spoilt for choice on where he could play him should he join.
The Magpies are in the market for a winger so David could slot in there to replace Jacob Murphy.
Jonathan David is a serial goalscorer
Newcastle need new goalscorers, they need options away from Isak who can come in and hit the ground running – for David, that shouldn’t be a problem.
At the two clubs he has played at, his goal return has been fantastic. Before he joined Lille he played for Belgian side KAA Gent. The Canadian scored 37 goals in 83 games in all competitions, bagging 15 assists in the process.
David has also played Champions League football this season – the 24-year-old has scored four goals in six games during the league phase. Level with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Michael Olise and Dusan Vlahovic.
If Newcastle qualify for European football next season, signing David should be seen as a priority given his experience in the competition.
