The ball is well and truly rolling at Newcastle United after a worrying June which saw just one addition for the youth team.

Antonio Cordero joined the Magpies on a free transfer, leaving Malaga after impressing in the Segunda Division. Now, it looks like Eddie Howe has taken his plans to bring players to the club up a notch.

Reports on Thursday stated that Newcastle United are edging closer to a deal for Anthony Elanga after placing a £55m bid for the young winger on Thursday evening.

The deal is now progressing well, and it looks like the 23-year-old could be a Newcastle player early next week. Howe has been eager to add more attacking quality on the right wing, and it now looks like he has that in Elanga.

With Newcastle closing in on their first major signing in nearly two years, here are the latest transfer news and rumours regarding the Magpies.

Nottingham Forest pleased with Newcastle United’s offer for Anthony Elanga

As it has been confirmed by multiple sources, personal terms should not be an issue between Newcastle and Elanga. The winger is open to joining the club and is excited about the prospect of linking up with good friends William Osula and Alexander Isak.

Now, it has been reported by the Northern Echo that Nottingham Forest are happy with Newcastle’s up-front offer for Elanga, it is now just a case of ironing out the add-ons before the deal will be agreed.

It is clear that the deal has taken a major step closer to completion, and fans will rejoice at the fact that a quality player will be joining the club after so long.

Newcastle fans should thank Osula for his friendship with Elanga, which has appeared to be a catalyst in the deal.

Newcastle United told to pay up to £43m for Giorgio Scalvini

After initial links in June, it has been reported that Giorgio Scalvini is now Newcastle’s top target, with Howe eager to get the young defender to the club as a long-term replacement for Dan Burn and Fabian Schar. The two defenders are now 33, so it is clear that Newcastle need to think about who will replace them.

It was reported by the Times that Newcastle value Scalvini at £30m. However, reports from Italy in June suggested that Newcastle need to pay between £34m and £43m for the 21-year-old.

Scalvini made just eight Serie A appearances last season after suffering a torn ACL and serious shoulder injury which kept him out of action for the majority of the campaign.

If Newcastle can negotiate well with Atalanta they will surely be able to get the player for closer to their valuation, but that remains to be seen.

Newcastle United did not act fast enough to sign Joao Pedro

In June, Geordie Boot Boys understood that Joao Pedro wanted to join Newcastle. However, the Brazilian has since signed for Chelsea for over £50m.

The 23-year-old is now in America with his new team, and is set to make his debut for Chelsea at the Club World Cup.

In a report from The Athletic, a Newcastle insider believes that they could have struck a deal with Pedro if they acted sooner. Despite that, the feeling is that he always had his heart on a move to Chelsea.

Additionally, Pedro believed he would play more at Chelsea than Newcastle, which makes sense as Isak is the Magpies’ undisputed first-choice striker.
