Newcastle United appear close to signing Anthony Elanga but how does his salary stack up agaisnt the rest of the squad?

Anthony Elanga looks set to become Newcastle United’s first major signing of the summer transfer window.

It’s been rough going for Newcastle up to this point as they have missed out on several of Eddie Howe’s top attacking targets.

Matheus Cunha quickly joined Manchester United and Bryan Mbeumo is set to follow him, while Chelsea snapped up Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.

However, it appears they may finally win one race as they are closing in on agreeing personal terms with Elanga after making a £55m bid to Nottingham Forest.

The deal would make Elanga Newcastle’s joint second most expensive player ever, only behind the £63m spent on Alexander Isak and level with Sandro Tonali.

That’s a hefty sum to be spending on a player given Newcastle’s recent PSR struggles but the winger at least may not break the wage bill structure.

What Anthony Elanga earns at Nottingham Forest

Newcastle have a big wage bill, paying out over £2m a week to their players and over £105m a year.

Six stars are on over £100,000 a week and most take home well over £50,000.

According to SalarySport, surprisingly, Elanga currently earns less than that threshold at Forest with £48,000 a week, which works out at just shy of £2.5m a year.

That wage would make him the Magpies’ 17th-best-paid player, behind the likes of Matt Targett and Isaac Hayden.

The Swede will obviously be demanding a hefty pay rise to make the move and will likely be on much more than his current salary, but Newcastle should be able to increase his pay without breaking their own wage structure.

Who are Newcastle United’s top five earners?

The PIF takeover in 2021 blessed Newcastle with unlimited riches that allow them to compete with the Premier League juggernauts for players, even if they have struggled on that front this summer.

It’s not only on transfer fees and the offer of Champions League football that Newcastle can provide, though; it’s high wages, too.

According to Salary Sport, Newcastle’s top five earners are:

  1. Bruno Guimaraes – £180,000 a week
  2. Sandro Tonali – £133,000 a week
  3. Alexander Isak – £120,000 a week
  4. Harvey Barnes – £120,000 a week
  5. Kieran Trippier – £100,000 a week

Given the quality of players Newcastle fans want the club to sign this summer so they can compete in the Champions League, there’s a chance new names breach the top five by the close of the window.
