Newcastle United prepared to equal transfer record with bid for James Trafford

Newcastle United are keen to sign James Trafford this summer.

Trafford was a Newcastle United transfer target in 2024 but ultimately remained at Burnley, before going on to play a starring role in their promotion from the Championship.

The 22-year-old produced a remarkable season for the Clarets, conceding only 16 goals in 45 games for Scott Parker’s side.

Still, Newcastle want to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and have the England hopeful in their sights.

They will not, however, overpay.

TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about Newcastle’s interest in Trafford.

He revealed that Newcastle are unlikely to bid more than £30million for Trafford, which may not be enough to convince the Clarets to sell.

“Newcastle couldn’t agree terms on James Trafford last summer – they have a valuation of the player and will stick to it,” he said.

“I don’t believe Newcastle will go over £30million – will that be enough, I am not so sure.

“This summer we have already seen Newcastle back away from Bryan Mbuemo and they won’t be afraid to do it again. They want that goalkeeper, but they still have Nick Pope so no matter what, it is not a huge need – just something that Eddie Howe wants.”

Paying that fee would make Trafford the joint-most expensive English goalkeeper of all time. As per BBC Sport, Jordan Pickford currently has that title, while Sky Sports would suggest Aaron Ramsdale could be level with that after he joined Arsenal in 2021.

Newcastle pulled out of a deal to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as it was too expensive and could do something similar if Burnley do not accept their valuation.

James Trafford’s demands to join Newcastle United

Trafford wants first-team football to join Newcastle, which would obviously have implications on Nick Pope.

Leeds are interested in signing Pope, who could fall behind Trafford in the pecking order if Newcastle finally land their man.

Eddie Howe wants to keep Pope but it’s hard to imagine him being happy to drop out of the starting lineup following the arrival of another goalkeeper, particularly one who remains relatively untested in the Premier League.

At some point, there will need to be a changing of the guard in goal. Right now, however, the club have many areas they need to strengthen so spending almost a record sum on a goalkeeper is likely to split opinion.
