James Trafford appears to be a Newcastle United transfer target again and sporting director Paul Mitchell must take note.
Trafford has long been linked with a move to Newcastle United, who reportedly attempted to sign the Burnley goalkeeper last season.
Indeed, it’s been claimed that Trafford wants to sign for Newcastle this summer despite the fact the Clarets have earned promotion to the Premier League under Scott Parker.
The 22-year-old starred during a remarkable season on the defensive front at Turf Moor, conceding only 16 goals while amassing the best save percentage in the Championship along the way.
However, the former Manchester City youngster appears to be in demand this summer. Manchester United are also interested in Trafford, who has reportedly made his desire clear to Mitchell.

James Trafford’s huge Newcastle United demands
Trafford has described himself as a “world class” goalkeeper and, based on his outings during the 2024-25 campaign, it’s difficult to disagree.
As such, it seems the player wants paying in line with that kind of status.
According to The Chronicle, Trafford’s representatives have indicated to Mitchell that he’ll only join if he’s guaranteed a starting berth at St James’ Park.
It’s also said that the custodian wants as much as £100k-per-week to join.
Newcastle United’s highest-paid players amid James Trafford demands
Trafford is within his rights to demand that. He’s clearly a talent on the rise and the fact he was included in England squads even while playing in the Championship underline just how highly rated he is.
However, agreeing to such demands would be a huge decision for the club.
Bruno Guimaraes is Newcastle’s highest-paid player on a reported £160k-per-week. The likes of Anthony Gordon, Kieran Trippier, Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali are not thought to be too far behind.
| Player | Weekly wage |
| Bruno Guimaraes | £160k-per-week |
| Joelinton | £150k-per-week |
| Anthony Gordon | £150k-per-week |
| Sandro Tonali | £120k-per-week |
| Kieran Trippier | £120k-per-week |
| Alexander Isak | £120k-per-week |
On that kind of pay packet, Trafford would suddenly become one of Newcastle’s top earners. Given he’s not exactly guaranteed to start straight away, it would be a huge decision.
