Newcastle United are in talks to finally sign James Trafford from Burnley this summer.

Trafford has been a Newcastle United target since the summer of 2024, and was involved in the England squad who struggled under Thomas Tuchel over the last few days.

The Burnley goalkeeper was on the bench for both games as the Three Lions beat Andorra before losing to Senegal on Tuesday night.

Newcastle are in talks with Burnley to sign Trafford, who sparked something of a reaction on social media before England’s loss to Senegal.

Indeed, Newcastle fans on X were happy to see him talk to a certain Dan Burn.

Newcastle United fans think they’ve seen a James Trafford development

Obviously, not too much can be taken from the fact Burn and Trafford were speaking before an England game.

It was notable, however, for Newcastle fans that he was spotted deep in conversation with a Toon player only hours after fresh transfer news broke.

One fan spotted: “And Gordon keeping watch whilst they talk!”

“Agent Dan Burn talking to James Trafford,” joked one fan.

One other fan followed suit and added: “Agent Burnie.”

“Agent BDB,” said one fan.

Another added: “Agent Burn reporting.”

“Agent Burn getting the Trafford deal over the line,” was another comment.

Do Manchester City have a sell-on clause for James Trafford?

Sadly, yes, Manchester City do have a sell-on clause for Trafford.

They sold the goalkeeper to Burnley in 2023 and are entitled to a percentage of any sale the Clarets make.

That is complicating matters for Newcastle. According to journalist Joel Bland on X, the Toon would “do well” to sign Trafford for below £35million, with Burnley holding out for a big fee because of the money they will need to pay City.

It remains to be seen if the club go that far. While Newcastle want to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, they already have Nick Pope in the squad.

Trafford is obviously a younger option and could feasibly play for the club for a decade or more, but the kind of money being discussed would be a transfer record for an English goalkeeper.

With that in mind, it’s not as easy as just going out and spending it.
