Newcastle United handed summer boost as Manchester City make transfer decision

Newcastle United know they are going to have to wait until the summer to make any signings.

The January transfer window has been dominated by talk of PSR, despite Newcastle United improving their financial position.

Miguel Almiron has been sold to Atlanta United, while Lloyd Kelly is joining Juventus on loan with an obligation to buy.

Those deals help Newcastle’s PSR position, but Eddie Howe will not feel the benefit until the summer.

Newcastle retain an interest in the likes of Tyler Dibling and James Trafford, and they are targets that could be revisited in the summer.

The same goes for James McAtee, who has been heavily linked with a move away from Manchester City during the January transfer window.

McAtee has been linked with Newcastle United, with claims that the Magpies could revisit him in the summer if they are unable to strike a deal during the current window.

That obviously is not going to happen, and it now looks likely that the 22-year-old will be up for grabs once the 2024/25 season comes to an end.

According to the Telegraph, James McAtee is not expected to leave Manchester City on transfer deadline day.

Bayer Leverkusen tried to sign McAtee last week, but the midfielder appears to be on course to remain at the Etihad Stadium.

Newcastle could get fresh chance to revisit Manchester City midfielder

That could be a boost for Newcastle, as it at least gives them a chance to reassess him when the summer transfer window arrives.

Newcastle are expected to overhaul their squad in the summer, and their new PSR room will enable that to happen.

McAtee could be an interesting player to target, as he is capable of playing centrally or out wide. Newcastle may opt to freshen up their central options, as Sean Longstaff could leave in the summer.

Of course, there are no guarantees that Newcastle will continue to target McAtee, but at least they have the opportunity to as he gets set to remain on the fringes at Manchester City for the rest of the season.
