Sporting director Paul Mitchell has to navigate a difficult transfer market to bring in Newcastle United’s desired targets.

It hasn’t been the most eventful January transfer window on Tyneside. As we reach the window’s midway point, Mitchell has only signed one player.

Kyle Fitzgerald will join Newcastle from Galway United later in the window when he turns 18, but there have been no signings for Eddie Howe despite his desire to improve multiple positions.

Howe wants a new attacker at Newcastle in January but it’s been difficult for Mitchell to give him what he wants with the Profit and Sustainability Rules still a problem.

It’s thought that Newcastle can’t spend big money until the summer when the losses from the 2021/22 season drop out of the PSR cycle.

However, it hasn’t stopped Newcastle from showing an interest in one Premier League star who has taken the league by storm despite his team struggling for wins.

Newcastle ‘newer suitors’ for Liam Delap

Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap is having a great season in the Premier League – he’s finally playing consistent top-flight football after several loan spells in the football league.

So far this season, the 21-year-old has scored eight goals and bagged two assists while Ipswich sit in the relegation zone.

According to Ben Jacobs speaking on The Football Terrace, Newcastle are ‘newer suitors’ for Delap. A kicker for the deal is that he may be unwilling to play second fiddle to Alexander Isak should he stay at the club.

Arsenal want Isak to leave Newcastle but have been put off by Howe and Mitchell’s valuation of the player.

Manchester City, Delap’s former club could have a buyback clause for him, but are unlikely to trigger it in January as they look to complete the signing of Omar Marmoush.

Marmoush was a Newcastle target which has since gone by the wayside as he now looks set for a move to the defending Premier League champions.

Delap compared to Alexander Isak

Both players are having great seasons in their own right – Isak has been immense for Newcastle in recent weeks with his goals taking him to joint third in the top scorers table this season.

The Magpies currently have William Osula and Callum Wilson at their disposal. While Osula’s goal against Bromley was a promising sign he has what it takes, Howe is keen to add proven quality to his team sooner rather than later.

Wilson remains injured and is out of contract in the summer, the 32-year-old is at a crossroads in his career which could see him depart Newcastle after almost five years at the club.

Delap would give Newcastle a player who loves to cause bother, his dribbling and ability to win fouls gives Howe’s set-piece takers great opportunities to pepper the box with crosses.
