Newcastle United deciding whether to sign Anthony Elanga or another £50m star for Eddie Howe

Newcastle United want to add another star player to their ranks once they solve their financial issues.

Since the PIF takeover in 2021, the recruitment at Newcastle United has been successful with the likes of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon now making up a core group of star players.

Sadly, the Profit and Sustainability Rules have stunted Newcastle’s growth – and spending – but the financial restrictions will soon ease and sporting director Paul Mitchell will be able to add to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Newcastle’s top priority is a right winger and, ideally, Howe will want one this month. However, there is also a chance the club will wait until the summer when they can spend more on a proven Premier League star.

Bryan Mbeumo is Newcastle’s “dream” target, but there are two other top-flight wingers that Newcastle have their eyes on.

Newcastle target Antoine Semenyo and Anthony Elanga

Newcastle failed to sign Anthony Elanga in the summer when a deadline day £50m bid was rejected by Nottingham Forest.

However, the 22-year-old is still on Newcastle’s radar and Forest could sell Elanga for a big bid in 2025 to help calm their PSR worries.

According to The Sun, Newcastle are also ready to rival Liverpool for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as well as Anthony Elanga.

The two Premier League stars – who are natural right-wingers – are viewed by Newcastle as a “future star capture”. Semenyo is also valued at £50m by Bournemouth.

A January move for Semenyo is unlikely, but if he is still at the Vitality Stadium come the summer then Newcastle could enter the race for his signature.

The report states they want Elanga or Semenyo, so it remains to be seen as to which one they will pursue.

Newcastle United risk going ‘stale’ without signings

Mitchell and Howe face a difficult dilemma this month. If Newcastle finish January without any major signings, it means the club should have a sizeable budget to spend in the summer when more targets are available.

However, Howe warned Newcastle’s squad could grow “stale” if no signings are made.

The Magpies have built up some brilliant momentum in recent weeks but another underwhelming window could dampen the mood around St James’ Park.

Mitchell has up to £70m to spend in January, but any major incomings would have to be answered by sales before the PSR deadline in June. If Newcastle choose not to spend, there will be a sizeable budget come the summer.
