There is a budget available at Newcastle United if a transfer opportunity arises this month.

It is no secret that Newcastle United are struggling to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules again.

However, reports suggest sporting director Paul Mitchell has a £70m budget this month. The only caveat is that any major incomings will require sales to be made by the summer.

Newcastle are already working on getting sales over the line with Martin Dubravka waving goodbye to fans ahead of a potential move to Saudi Arabia.

Miguel Almiron will likely leave Newcastle too after falling down the pecking order at St James’ Park. In terms of incomings, Newcastle want a new right winger but there is also a growing concern that no one will be signed this window.

Pete Graves shares update from ‘high-ranking’ Newcastle chief

So far, Eddie Howe has appeared fairly pessimistic about Newcastle’s transfer plans.

After beating Ipswich, Howe said he expects a quiet January with Newcastle concentrating on the players they do have rather than adding to the squad.

On top of that, Howe said ‘business logic’ will dictate transfer plans, implying that Newcastle may be forced to sell more players just as they did in the summer.

Via the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast, journalist Pete Graves has provided an update.

“I get a lot of fans asking me about Newcastle United,” Graves said. “I spoke to a fairly high-ranking official at the club again this week.

“I think that it’s going to be a difficult window for Newcastle, this one, to bring players in.

“I think fans are desperate that there wasn’t much added in the summer.”

Newcastle United at risk of growing ‘stale’

Howe said himself that this Newcastle squad could grow “stale” if Mitchell fails to bring in any new signings this month.

“Sometimes the same squad can produce a staleness and a negative product so I think we’re aware of that,” Howe said, as quoted by The Times.

After ending the summer window with a net profit, it would be hugely underwhelming to go through another window without any direct upgrades to the squad.

With the Magpies chasing Champions League qualification and silverware this season, a new signing or two could help to maintain the brilliant momentum built up in recent weeks.

Plus with Dubravka and Almiron – and potentially others – on their way out of the club, the very least Newcastle must do is source replacements.
