Premier League ‘leader’ is named as Newcastle United’s ‘dream’ transfer target ahead of January

Newcastle United have a big decision to make when it comes to signing a right winger.

It is the biggest position of weakness in the Newcastle United squad, and the hope is that will change during the January transfer window.

It has been reported that Newcastle’s priority is to sign a right winger, rather than a centre-back. That is despite committing most of the summer towards the failed pursuit of Marc Guehi.

But the Magpies are realigning their priorities as January looms, with Paul Mitchell and Eddie Howe set to target someone who can score and create goals rather than a player who keeps it out at the other end of the pitch.

It has been reported that Newcastle are still interested in Anthony Elanga, after failing to sign him from Nottingham Forest in the summer.

However, it does not look like he will be Mitchell’s top target in 2025.

According to iNews, Newcastle’s dream winger signing is Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.

Mbeumo was linked with Newcastle over the summer, with some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs keeping their eye on a player who was often underappreciated due to the presence of Ivan Toney in West London.

Bryan Mbeumo ticks a lot of boxes for Newcastle

But Mbeumo has proven that he can be Brentford’s main man. He stepped up during Toney’s suspension, and he is now flying following the former Toon forward’s transfer to Saudi Arabia.

Mbeumo is enjoying an incredible start to the season. He has scored six goals in eight Premier League games for Brentford. For context, the entire Newcastle United squad have scored eight Premier League goals between them.

The 25-year-old is in fine form, and looks absolutely perfect for Eddie Howe’s attack. He is clinical in the final third, while he can also operate as a central striker too. That type of versatility could make him a perfect option for January.

Newcastle transfer is unlikely for Mbeumo

However, iNews add that a deal for Mbeumo is unlikely in January.

That is a shame, as the man who Thomas Frank described as a ‘leader in the making‘ could be the solution to all of Newcastle’s problems.

It will be interesting to see whether Mitchell at least tests the water with an approach for the Cameroon international or identifies an alternative target.

Another option for Newcastle could be to wait until the summer of 2025 to move for Mbeumo, but the Magpies desperately need a new right winger in January.
