Newcastle United must deliver in the January transfer window to increase their chances of Champions League qualification.

The Magpies are enjoying a fantastic run of form having won four Premier League games in a row, climbing to fifth in the process.

Newcastle’s win against Manchester United on Monday was yet another reflection of how far Eddie Howe‘s squad have come since the start of the season after a slow start to proceedings.

It’s an important transfer window for sporting director Paul Mitchell who was left to pick up the pieces from the club’s failed summer window which saw many players linked but few quality options signed.

While incoming players are key to building on the good run of form, Newcastle need to sell before they can buy – the likes of Miguel Almiron could depart in January.

One player linked was Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga with the Magpies even placing a deadline-day bid for the 22-year-old.

With Newcastle in the market for the winger, the club have now learned what it would take to bring him to Tyneside.

Newcastle must bid high for Anthony Elanga

The Magpies are in a position where their squad is at the level which can compete for a place in Europe, but the right wing has always been a weakness since Howe was appointed in 2021.

Although Jacob Murphy is enjoying a purple patch as of late, there’s no guarantee he can keep it up until the end of the season. With Almiron’s exit looking likely Elanga is one of the options Newcastle can look to for more quality and to weaken a Nottingham Forest side who have had an excellent start to the season.

According to the Telegraph, Forest are keen on keeping their core players at the club but there is interest in Elanga. The thought is that in a PSR-driven world, the club would reluctantly accept a big bid for the Swede who would link-up with fellow countryman Alexander Isak if he joined.

Elanga has had a slow start to proceedings despite Forest’s success, scoring three goals and bagging three assists while appearing in every Premier League game for his club this season.

Elsewhere, Newcastle are also interested in signing Brentford midfielder Bryan Mbeumo who would cost around £50m in January.

Anthony Elanga compared to Newcastle wingers

After a slow start to the season, Elanga has found his form at a busy part of the season. The 22-year-old has scored three and assisted once in his previous four games including a goal against Newcastle’s next opponents Tottenham Hotspur.

Like Elanga, Murphy has also hit good form during December, playing a big part in the Magpies wins in recent weeks.

Statistically, Murphy has been the better player so far this season. However, Elanga would be seen as a long-term option on the wing with Murphy now 29.
