Newcastle now unlikely to hijack 25-year-old’s transfer

Clearly, Newcastle United cannot sign every player they’ve been linked with.

Were that to be the case, Eddie Howe would be overseeing one of the biggest squads in world football next season.

Newcastle appear to be closing in on a move for Sandro Tonali and continue to be linked with James Maddison.

Of the many names mentioned, they would appear to be the ones with the strongest links.

Still, such is the insatiable nature of the transfer window, there are plenty of others to keep a track of.

One of those is Marcus Thuram.

Indeed, the Frenchman has been linked with a move to Newcastle.

A free agent after leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach and having impressed during France’s run to the World Cup final in December, the 25-year-old is reportedly in demand.

However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, Thuram now looks set for a move to Inter Milan and Newcastle are unlikely to get involved.

Speaking to the NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith YouTube show, Jacobs said: “For Marcus Thuram I think he’s joining Inter Milan and that one is pretty much done, so it would be very surprising if Newcastle hijacked that deal.

“We have always seen these links with Newcastle and Marcus Thuram and there’s never been as much substance to it.

“I think Eddie Howe was even asked after the World Cup, and said ‘the only thing I can tell you is that it has been out there in the media but there has been nothing more to it than that’.

“So this one is not going to be a deal that ends well for Newcastle, because the player is joining Inter Milan.”

Midfield a much bigger area of concern

While the idea of signing a French international forward on a free transfer was a nice one, Newcastle have more pressing areas to address.

Bruno Guimaraes remains the only midfielder officially signed during the PIF era, with Howe reportedly keen on bringing in more options there even after the seemingly likely arrival of Tonali.

Though strength and depth up front would be beneficial, Newcastle can only sign so many players during one summer transfer window.

There are bigger priorities at the moment.
