Newcastle still think they can hijack another transfer after Tonali deal

All of the transfer talk surrounding Newcastle United at the moment centres around a certain Sandro Tonali.

The AC Milan midfielder is widely expected to join Newcastle reasonably imminently, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the agreement.

Tonali’s arrival, however, might not end the pursuit of James Maddison.

The Leicester City playmaker has been linked with a move to St James’ Park for the best part of a year now but there has been little concrete movement on that front despite his club’s relegation.

Tottenham continue to be credited with an interest in the England star and perhaps there could be some fresh developments over the coming week.

Indeed, according to the Daily Mail, Spurs are set to renew their interest in Maddison this week.

There were reportedly suggestions the Leicester man would rather a move to London but the report adds some interesting details.

They claim a rival bid from Newcastle remains a possibility even despite the move for Tonai and that figures on Tyneside believe they can still mount an offer to sign Maddison.

The Foxes are believed to be holding out for £60m despite the 26-year-old having just a year left on his contract.

We need a resolution to the Maddison saga

Given just how long Newcastle have tracked Maddison, it seems safe to assume the club rate him highly.

Clearly, signing him would be a boost. After all, even during a relegation season at the King Power Stadium, the former Norwich man still managed to score 10 goals and register nine assists, figures that would have seen him rank joint-third and first respectively in the Newcastle squad last season.

Still, it’s been going on far too long.

Pre-season is not far away and surely Howe would have most of his top targets signed by then. If Maddison would rather go to Spurs, it may soon be time to admit defeat.
