The transfer of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan to Newcastle United is almost complete so now it’s time to look at who’s next.
While Newcastle fans are abuzz with news that Sandro Tonali‘s move to Tyneside is nearing completion, there is the small matter of the rest of Newcastle’s transfer business this summer.
Given that the fee for Tonali is set to be higher than the £63million we paid for Alexander Isak last summer, it’s safe to assume that the reports of Newcastle’s summer transfer budget being a mere £75million were pretty wide of the mark, especially as 90mins are claiming Newcastle want four more players after Tonali.
Newcastle could push the limits of FFP this summer
It was always going to be a guessing game as to how Newcastle would approach this transfer window after the team over-performed last season. The owners didn’t expect Champions League football so quickly into their project so the idea of spending Champions League money in their second summer window was probably not in their brief.
Financial Fair Play restrictions will seriously dictate the next few comings and goings as, despite qualifying for the top European competition, it’s the first time we’ve done so in 20 years so it will take a couple more years in said competition before we are bringing in the kind of money that would make FFP less of an issue.

However, as FFP runs over a three year rolling timeline, there’s scope for Newcastle to gamble and spend big this year and less over the next two. The risk there being that if we spend big now and don’t make it back into the Champions League we could be forced into selling top players to even things up which puts us right back to square one.
It looks, however, that Newcastle are prepared to take that risk according to the report in 90mins as, despite spending big on Tonali, the Magpies want four more signings this summer.
Newastle are looking at four more transfers after Tonali
Eddie Howe will be looking for a full-back, a right sided defender, a wide forward and a number 10. The report names James Maddison as the likely candidate for the latter position, however, reports coming out last night also suggested that Newcastle’s interest in Maddison has cooled as they’ve switched their focus to Dominik Szoboszlai.
Whichever of those players Newcastle go for, they’re likely to cost over £50million which would take the spending over the £100million mark with three more players to go.

One full back that was mentioned last night was Tonali’s AC Milan teammate Theo Hernandez who is absolutely phenomenal, but again, not cheap.
It looks like we are in for a very exciting summer.
