Newcastle United are looking to sign a centre midfielder during the January transfer window, and Kalvin Phillips looks like the leading candidate.
The Manchester City player has been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside, but another player on Newcastle’s radar is Amadou Onana.
The 22-year-old has been a target for Newcastle for a long time. He was linked with a switch to St James’ Park in the summer of 2022, before he went to Everton. In the end, it was the Toffees who secured his signature from Lille, but the Magpies’ interest did not end there.
There was talk of a move last January, but Anthony Gordon ended up being the only Evertonian to arrive in the North East.
And he was even mentioned heading into the current January transfer window, with Newcastle looking to take advantage of the Toffees’ difficult financial situation.
However, they are looking for a mammoth fee to sell Onana this month.

Everton want £60million for Newcastle target Amadou Onana
According to iNews, Everton want at least £60million to sell Onana. They state that Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested in the Belgium international, adding that Newcastle are also admirers.
While Newcastle continue to be big fans of the ‘exciting‘ Onana, that price tag will be enough to put them off.
A fee of £60million would make him the Magpies’ second most expensive signing ever, sandwiched in between Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali.
While he is certainly a talented player who Toon officials believe could be a hit on Tyneside, there is no way we are going to spend that kind of money during the January transfer window. Profit and sustainability rules surely would not allow it.
iNews add that a summer move for Onana is much more likely, so do not be surprised if Newcastle continue to be linked with him. However, they also state that Everton could be tempted to sell now if a big offer comes their way.
It won’t be from Newcastle, but the other Premier League clubs that are interested seem to have a much easier time of splashing the cash, so they could always bow down to Everton’s demands in January.
