Newcastle transfer news: Toon looking at Lille midfielder Amadou Onana

Newcastle United are reportedly interested Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.

That’s according to 90min, who state that the Magpies and Everton have been looking at the 20-year-old.

Eddie Howe’s side have been linked with a few central midfielders this summer, despite that not being the club’s priority. Newcastle are currently looking at attacking options, and could make a move for Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak.

But midfield is another area in which Newcastle can improve, which is why the club have likely been looking at Onana.

However, another Premier League club are already taking steps to sign him.

West Ham have already had bids rejected for Amadou Onana

90min state that West Ham have already made a move to sign Onana. They report that the Hammers have had two bids rejected.

David Moyes’ side could make another move to sign the Belgium international, but it is going to take big money to prise him away from Lille.

The report from 90min adds that he could cost as much as £50million. That would make him West Ham’s new record signing, and Newcastle’s if he moved to St James’ Park.

Talk of that kind of money makes a move to Tyneside unlikely, especially after the Magpies already splashed out on one of his now former teammates.

Newcastle looking at another Lille player after Sven Botman deal

Onana spent last season playing alongside Sven Botman. However, the defender is now a Newcastle player.

He officially joined the club on July 1st, and is currently training with his new teammates in Austria. Botman will hopefully make his first appearance in a Toon shirt on Friday against 1860 Munich.

The 22-year-old is currently making friends at Newcastle, having arrived at St James’ Park without knowing anyone. However, that would change if Onana joined the club.

The young midfielder would certainly be a good addition as he looks like a real talent. He’s dominant in midfield, and his powerful running can get his team up the pitch.

But a deal simply isn’t going to happen at £50million. Newcastle need to improve elsewhere, and are having to be careful with their spending.

While the Magpies will miss out, West Ham might have to break the bank.
