Newcastle transfer news: Toon ask Everton about Amadou Onana

Newcastle United are already trying to sign one Everton player in Anthony Gordon, and now they are linked with another in Amadou Onana.

According to 90min, the Magpies have asked the Toffees about the possibility of signing the 21-year-old midfielder. The report adds that Chelsea have enquired too, because they seemingly want every player we are after.

While a deal for Gordon feels like a real possibility this month, it would come as a real surprise to see Onana head to St James’ Park. In fact, any move away from Goodison Park for the Belgium international would be a shock.

He only joined the Toffees last summer, arriving for an initial £33million from Lille. While Everton are seriously struggling this season and have just got rid of Frank Lampard, Onana has been one of their shining lights.

The youngster looks like he can become a real force in the Premier League – although that might not be where Everton are next season with relegation a very real possibility.

In contrast, Newcastle are gunning for a place in the Champions League, and have now asked about signing a player who has experience of that exact competition. Onana played in Europe’s top tournament last season, with Lille losing to Chelsea in the Round of 16.

Amadou Onana played with Newcastle defender Sven Botman at Lille

If Newcastle do bring in Onana, it would see the Belgian reunited with one of his former Lille teammates. He played alongside Sven Botman in France, who also headed to the Premier League last summer.

As we all know, the Dutchman joined Newcastle for £35million. He has proven to be a revelation at the back, joining the long list of incredible signings the new owners have made since replacing Mike Ashley.

Onana looks like he could fall into that category too, and is capable of filling the midfield void that Eddie Howe currently has.

The Magpies are without Jonjo Shelvey right now, while Bruno Guimaraes also suffered an injury scare that shined a spotlight on Newcastle’s limited options in the middle of the park. Howe is keen to bring in someone who can play the ‘number six’ role, and Onana could fit the bill.

He has an incredible engine, and has the physical stature to be an enforcer in the middle at St James’ Park. Onana has leadership qualities too, with Roberto Martinez recently describing him as ‘captain material‘.

That will be music to Dan Ashworth’s ears, and he is no doubt well aware of Onana’s ability. Newcastle were linked with him during the summer before his move to Everton.

Now he is on the Magpies’ radar again, although a deal will surely be very difficult given the fact he is only at the beginning of his Toffees career.
