Newcastle United are yet to make their first signing of the January transfer window, despite relentless links about Kalvin Phillips heading to Tyneside.
There has been confidence about a deal being done, but we are still yet to see Kalvin Phillips arrive at St James’ Park and sign for Newcastle United on loan from Manchester City.
As always, money appears to be the issue. The loan fee that Manchester City are looking for is too much, while there are claims that Newcastle might need to move some players on before they can bring the 28-year-old in.
But a deal still does feel likely, with reports stating that Phillips is interested in a move to St James’ Park.
And a new report from the Chronicle explains why the £42million midfielder is so interested.

Kalvin Phillips is keen to play for Eddie Howe at Newcastle
According to the Chronicle, Phillips is keen on working with Eddie Howe as Newcastle continue to try and sign him on loan from Manchester City.
They report that he is eager stay in the Premier League rather than move abroad, and that Howe’s presence on Tyneside could influence where he ends up.
That is a testament to the job that Howe has done as Newcastle United manager. He has boosted the club massively since his arrival in 2021, and has the ability to take it even further.
His coaching ability is his biggest selling point. So many players have improved since working with him, and that will not be lost on Phillips.
But despite Newcastle’s interest and Phillips’ desire to move to the North East, a deal is still not done. The Chronicle state that Manchester City are not budging on their loan fee, having asked clubs to pay around £7.5million to borrow him for the rest of the season.
