A new name is on Newcastle United’s radar as we head into the final few days of the January transfer window – Jacob Ramsey.

Newcastle are looking to make at least one signing before the transfer window closes, and are keen to bring in a centre midfielder. That is the club’s priority following Joelinton’s season-ending injury.

Aston Villa ace Jacob Ramsey is the latest name to be linked with the Magpies. That is according to the Athletic, who claim that Newcastle have approached Unai Emery’s side about signing the 22-year-old.

They report that Ramsey will cost at least £50million, which could make him a bit too expensive for Eddie Howe’s side as they struggle with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

But Ramsey would be a worthwhile investment if the money is available, and he is someone who has received huge praise from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher in the past.

Jamie Carragher thinks Jacob Ramsey will become ‘top class’

In September 2022, Carragher was discussing the England squad on X (formerly known as Twitter). One of his followers named five players who should be involved, one of which was Ramsey.

Carragher admitted that the Aston Villa man was a ‘good’ Premier League player, but actually tipped him for much greater things.

He wrote: “Ramsey will be top class in the future.”

Ramsey looks ideal for Newcastle’s present and future

But that future could potentially be in black and white. He is a very intriguing transfer option going into the final few days of the window, and would tick a lot of boxes.

Firstly, he is versatile. He can fill the midfield role that Eddie Howe is looking for, while he is also capable of playing out wide. Ramsey often plays on the left wing for Aston Villa, which is a position he could occupy at Newcastle. That would allow Anthony Gordon to play on the right, where there could be a vacancy if Miguel Almiron is sold.

Like a lot of Newcastle’s targets, Ramsey is a player with stacks of potential. He is someone who could grow and develop under Howe, while he is already talented enough to have an immediate impact. Strong in the tackle and an impressive dribbler – he has the ideal profile to thrive in Howe’s midfield.

It may all come down to money, as £50million is a lot – especially when you can’t afford to spend anything!

Like every transfer at the moment, it will be dependent on Newcastle selling someone first.
