David Ornstein got Newcastle United hearts racing on Monday, but it looks like it was all for nothing.

He broke the news that the Magpies were interested in signing Jacob Ramsey. The Aston Villa man had been identified as a target according to the Athletic, with Newcastle approaching Villa about a deal.

However, Unai Emery made it clear on Monday afternoon that he wants the 22-year-old to stay at Villa Park, while a fresh update from the Athletic’s David Ornstein has suggested that the midfielder will not be heading to St James’ Park before the transfer window closes on Thursday night.

David Ornstein does not think Newcastle will sign Jacob Ramsey

Ornstein has addressed the state of play at Newcastle and their interest in Ramsey on the latest episode of the Athletic’s Daily Transfer Briefing podcast.

“What’s become clear with Newcastle as the window has gone on is that they will need to sell somebody for significant value if they want to bring in a new player,” he said.

“Not only permanently, but maybe even a loan because they are so tight on profitability and sustainability [rules].

“There are players they like such as Jacob Ramsey at Aston Villa, Aston Villa might have to consider his departure to help their own profitability and sustainability position but I think he is going to stay now. It’s getting too late and he is an important player there at Villa.

“It shows Newcastle have been looking around but they couldn’t do anything without a notable exit.”

One for Newcastle to revisit in the summer potentially

Ornstein expects Ramsey to remain at Aston Villa, which is a blow for Newcastle.

That coincides with the Magpies struggling to sell anyone, which is required before Eddie Howe can make a signing.

It had looked like Miguel Almiron might go, but his move to Saudi Arabia appears to be off. That will result in him being involved against Aston Villa tonight.

But it will also mean that it will be a quiet few days for Newcastle on the transfer front. They are not going to be able to sign anyone, which is massively disappointing.

It is even more disappointing when you consider some of the players who Newcastle have been linked with. A move for Jacob Ramsey would have been massively exciting, as he is a major talent.

You would like to assume that he will be on the Magpies’ radar again in the summer, when they will finally be able to spend some money again. And by then Aston Villa might be more willing to sell, as they will have more time to find a replacement.

But that does not help Newcastle now, who appear to have left it too late to tempt Ramsey to Tyneside. And even if he was keen, the money to buy him is simply not available.
