Newcastle United splashed out on Anthony Gordon from Everton in 2023, and 2024 could see another Toffee arrive on Tyneside.
The Magpies are continuing to look for a new centre midfielder following Joelinton’s injury, with a deal for Kalvin Phillips seemingly in doubt due to Manchester City’s demands.
Now Newcastle may have found an alternative to the England international, and it is someone who they have been linked with signing on multiple occasions in the past.
Newcastle look into signing Amadou Onana from Everton
According to the Telegraph, Newcastle are now looking into a potential deal for Everton’s Amadou Onana, having discussed the midfielder heavily during a meeting this week.
They state that the Magpies are eager to see if Everton would be willing to loan him out this month, before paying £50million to sign him permanently in the summer.
That kind of figure would make him Newcastle’s third most expensive signing ever behind Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali.
The Telegraph add that Amadou Onana is unsettled at Goodison Park, while Newcastle could benefit from Everton’s financial situation following their second breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
He is viewed as a short and long-term solution, which is no surprise considering how regularly he has been linked with a move to the North East since the summer of 2022.

Onana has been linked with Newcastle a lot in the past
Newcastle signed Sven Botman from Lille in 2022, and they also considered a move for his teammate. Onana was on Newcastle’s radar, but he would instead sign for Everton for £33million.
The Belgian has impressed on Merseyside, and that is why Onana has continued to be mentioned as a possible target for Eddie Howe’s side.
They asked about him this time last year while they were trying to do a deal for Anthony Gordon, and their admiration for Onana has not gone away.
Newcastle clearly have a lot of faith in his ability, and believe he could be a star at St James’ Park. That is why they are willing to spend £50million on him – but not until the summer.
