Newcastle United fans were given a worrying update about Joelinton on Friday, but now his injury could be even worse.

The 27-year-old picked up an injury during the Tyne-Wear derby win over Sunderland, which led to Eddie Howe confirming that he would be out of action for at least six weeks.

That was devastating news, and Joelinton was a big miss during Saturday’s defeat to Manchester City.

Howe’s initial prognosis suggested that the Brazilian could be out of action until the backend of February, but a new report suggests things could be even worse than first feared.

Joelinton could be out for the season due to injury

According to ESPN, Joelinton could be out for the rest of the season with the thigh injury that he suffered against Sunderland.

The report states that Joelinton has been assessed further and it has been suggested that he might need surgery. If he does undergo surgery, he would be out for four months and his season would be over.

ESPN add that the midfielder is keen to avoid surgery, with a specialist set to be consulted.

Losing Joelinton would be devastating for Newcastle United

Losing Joelinton for the rest of the season would be an absolute disaster. He is often the heartbeat in midfield, as we saw against Sunderland and in the Champions League loss to AC Milan.

He has been immense this season, but he has struggled for fitness. It has been a stop start campaign for him, but now it could stop for an extended period.

If Joelinton is out for the rest of the season, it will mean that he is the second Newcastle midfielder to be ruled out until the 2024/25 campaign. The other is Sandro Tonali, who is serving a ban for betting.

Combine that with Newcastle’s other injuries and Eddie Howe has had absolutely no luck when it comes to his squad. He has had to deal with more games than ever, yet his squad has never been more depleted.

Fingers crossed this is not true about Joelinton, but it certainly does not look good.
