Paul Mitchell is closing in on the signing of Spanish youngster Antonio Cordero at Newcastle United.
Newcastle United fans were excited by Paul Mitchell’s appointment in the summer when he was brought in as the successor to Dan Ashworth as sporting director.
However, Newcastle’s PSR issues meant that Paul Mitchell had to remain patient before he could truly reinforce Eddie Howe’s squad.
Over January, Newcastle decided against recruiting but fans were impressed when Mitchell earned £11m from Miguel Almiron’s sale. The profit generated over the last 12 months means the Magpies can finally expect a reasonable budget this summer.

Newcastle United fans react to Antonio Cordero deal
On Tuesday morning, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano dropped his infamous “here we go” line for Malaga winger Antonio Cordero to join Newcastle.
Cordero has starred for Malaga this season and is considered one of the most exciting young talents in Spain with both Barcelona and Real Madrid interested in his signature.
However, it is Newcastle who have won the race to sign him, and fans on social media are over the moon.
“WOW. Getting Antonio Cordero over Barca and Real Madrid is a huge complement to NUFC project. It seems we are now living in a Paul Mitchell era,” one fan posted on X.
Another wrote: “Paul Mitchell beating Europe’s elite to bring in a Spanish wonderkid on a free whilst Dan Ashworth was paying over Zirkzee’s release clause at #MUFC. Thank you Sir Jim #NUFC”
“Spanish player picking Newcastle over Barcelona and Real Madrid Still some people that don’t think we’re a big club,” one fan wrote.
The praise for Mitchell continued: “Paul Mitchell and his staff don’t get the credit they deserve for signings like this, there’s an enormous amount of work goes on in the background for months before it’s announced, to beat top clubs for signings. We have the right people at the club.”
How Antonio Cordero will fit into Eddie Howe’s Newcastle
Under Mitchell, Newcastle’s transfer strategy has been to scout exciting youngsters who could potentially develop into superstars at St James’ Park – Cordero is his latest project.
However, Newcastle fans might have to wait a little while longer to see Cordero in a Newcastle shirt.
That is because Eddie Howe plans to loan Cordero out next season to give the 18-year-old winger some valuable experience.
It is a strategy that Newcastle have regularly used, with Yankuba Minteh going out on loan before he eventually made a £30m move to Brighton in the summer.
With Cordero viewed as a future investment, Newcastle are still on the lookout to sign a first team-ready winger in the summer.
