Paul Mitchell has not been able to get any deals over the line at Newcastle United in January.

It has been an incredibly quiet January transfer window for Newcastle United who needed to add more depth to the squad to keep their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League high.

The Magpies sit fifth in the Premier League table, level on points with Manchester City. They are soon to be short of options on the right wing with Miguel Almiron close to leaving Newcastle.

After six years on Tyneside, Almiron will return to Atlanta United in a deal worth around £11m. His departure means that Jacob Murphy is the only natural option on the right wing for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

Newcastle wanted a winger in the January transfer window. With a few days left before the window closes, they will struggle to get a deal over the line.

While Howe waits to see if there will be some late transfer activity – a Premier League rival has now entered the race to sign one of Newcastle’s top targets.

Liverpool tracking Newcastle target Bryan Mbeumo

Bryan Mbeumo is a player who has taken the league by storm this season. In 23 games, the 25-year-old has 17 goal involvements.

With the Magpies situation, it is no surprise that Mbeumo is Newcastle’s ‘dream’ signing. The winger has partnered up well with Brentford striker Yoan Wissa this season. Fans will be hoping that if Newcastle were to sign him, Mbeumo would have a similar partnership with Alexander Isak.

Mbeumo’s form means that he has a number of eyes on him. Now, according to TeamTalk, Liverpool are tracking the Cameroonian who they see as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah whose contract expires at the end of the season.

The report states that a move in the summer looks more likely due to Brentford’s reluctance to let him go midway through the season. Bees boss Thomas Frank sent a ‘good luck’ message to Mbeumo’s admirers who wanted to sign him in January.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher urged Arne Slot to sign Mbeumo to replace Salah. He admitted that he was a ‘huge fan’ of his.

Mbeumo’s contract is up at the end of next season – there is no pressure on Brentford to sell in January but if the club and player fail to come to an agreement over a new contract it is likely that Mbeumo will leave in the summer.

The report also states that like Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur also have a ‘concrete’ interest in Mbeumo.

Mbeumo’s stats compared to Newcastle wingers

While Newcastle staff dream of signing Mbeumo. Fans will also be dreaming of an attacking line of Anthony Gordon, Isak and Mbeumo.

While Almiron leaves Newcastle, Mbeumo would be a similar player stylistically. Like Almiron, Mbeumo is a left-footed right winger who likes to play with the ball at his feet.

Appearances (League)GoalsAssists

Anthony Gordon2265
Jacob Murphy2038
Harvey Barnes2051

Mbeumo certainly has an eye for the net, his 14 league goals this season prove that. Murphy is a player who is more likely to bag an assist rather than a goal. He has the most assists for Newcastle this season with nine in all competitions compared to Mbeumo’s four.

Mbeumo should not have a problem adapting to Howe’s style of football. Like Frank, Howe also plays an attacking 4-3-3 formation which gives the wingers a lot of freedom to stay forward.
