Newcastle United face tough competition to sign their transfer targets in January.

Paul Mitchell has his work cut out in his first full transfer window at Newcastle. PSR is still a lingering problem despite Newcastle selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in the summer.

Eddie Howe wants to improve Newcastle’s attacking options in January – ideally, a right winger to improve quality and depth. Although Jacob Murphy is going through a purple patch, there’s no guarantee he’ll keep that up until the end of the season.

Howe also wants a striker to make up for the injured Callum WilsonNewcastle’s summer move for William Osula is seen as a long-term project.

A goalkeeper is also desired in January. Martin Dubravka’s move to Al-Shabab looks imminent – Newcastle want James Trafford as Dubravka’s replacement.

Now, the latest transfer report suggests Newcastle could lose out on a winger they adore to Arsenal.

Arsenal planning move for Newcastle target Bryan Mbeumo

Bryan Mbeumo is enjoying a fantastic season at Brentford so far – the Cameroon international has scored 13 goals in the Premier League this season, level with Newcastle forward Alexander Isak.

Newcastle sees Mbeumo as a “dream signing” who would immediately improve the right wing on arrival. However, according to Florian Plettenberg, Mbeumo is on Arsenal’s shortlist for a move in the summer.

He states that the Gunners are looking to improve on the wing – a long-term injury setback for Bukayo Saka is the most likely catalyst to the decision.

Brentford wants Newcastle to pay £50million for Mbeumo, who is out of contract at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Bees boss Thomas Frank has already ruled out a January sale, saying “good luck” to any teams that want to sign Mbeumo midway through the season.

Newcastle have seen Mbeumo’s ability first-hand

The Magpies were on the receiving end of Mbeumo’s abilities in December when they visited the Gtech Community Stadium.

Mbeumo scored and bagged an assist as Brentford beat Newcastle 4-2 – it was the Magpies’ last defeat before they went on their current winning streak.

Mbeumo scored a brace and bagged another assist on Saturday as Brentford beat Premier League strugglers Southampton 5-0.
